Walking from Fira to Oia

We had one of those moments again today.  You see we were kicking back not exactly rushing out to great the day since we ‘knew’ we had the cruise booked for this afternoon so the plan was to walk around Fira this morning.

We had breakfast on the balcony watching with some amusement as some donkeys trotted down the pathway below, quite by themselves with a man in hot pursuit following a short time later.  Given a cruise ship had just pulled up out ‘front’ I an not say I blame the poor donkeys.  Either way said man managed to round up the donkeys and herd them back across and down to the harbour.

We weren’t exactly rushing, then it hit Cass that she had the date wrong and our cruise was for tomorrow not today.  That kind of threw a spanner in the works.  So we hatched a plan to walk to Oia.  We’d both read before coming here that is was possible so figured it might be a nice walk and also something that didn’t really need a lot of planning.

So off we went walking around the caldera in the general direction that we knew Oia to be.  We did have one small detour down to see the harbour, we walked leaving the donkeys for someone else to ride.  We discovered a number of tourist shops down the bottom and sellers offering cruises.  We simply walked along then took the cable car back up to the top.

The walk between Fira and Oia isn’t really all that hard, there is a walking trail all the way mostly following the ridge line in the direction of Oia with a couple of exceptions.

Its not all paved though so good walking shoes are recommended, or at least I think so.

The views most of the way along are stunning and it was well worth the walk.

There was also some wildlife along the way although it didn’t have us frozen and scared for our very lives….

We left our hotel about 1000hrs and made it to Oia, had lunch, um, and a glass of white wine (we polished off a bottle of water too!) then were on the bus about 1430 hours to get back to Fira.

Ok so you can not see the view because we're facing it but hey lunch was good, Oia Santorini Greece 2015

I must say the bus was a lot quicker!  Still I’m glad we did the walk.

According to my phone the walk from our hotel in Fira to Oia, (including the detour) was:

15km

19000 steps

58 floors
