We had a plan. Overall it was a great day with only one thing failing expectation.
The day started out beautifully with the one thing we couldn’t control, the weather. It was a stunning day, blue skies, warm weather, barely a cloud and a great bunch of people. Well ok, my day started with a coffee at Second Cup before heading to the meeting point at the appointed time. Good coffee first up in the morning, what could be better on a beautiful day. At least if your a coffee drinker!
We headed out of Nicosia in convoy for a brunch in Lefkara at Tasties.
We’d booked a table for our group in advance since we were a large group and the little family run cafe is so popular.
The menu for such a small place with all ‘home cooked’ food was quite varied. I had a chicken bolognese, the serving was huge but really yum!
After that came the one disappointment of the day. It was advertised as a ‘horse ride on the beach’. There was plenty of communication with the proprietors regarding the size of our group and the mixed riding experience level. Nothing was said to indicate before hand that we could not go on the beach ride which is actually what we had booked.
Instead they gave us a 30min ‘lesson’ around the ring, we could see the water off in the distance. That was it. Then the excuses as to why our group would not get to go on the beach ride that we’d actually booked for.
I wouldn’t recommend the particular horse riding place unless all you want is a riding lesson. Enough said.
Next up on the itinerary for the day was a visit to Kourion, an ancient archaeological site on the South Coast. It apparently rose to prominence about the 13 Century BC when Mycenaean colonisers established a settlement at the location. A ‘who’s who’ of the ancient era seemed to be involved in the area, Ptolemies, Romans and early Christians. With earthquakes and pirate raids the site gradually declined with the main settlement moving it fell into disuse until early excavation attempts at the site began in 1876.
There is a reconstruction of a Roman Theatre on the site where the original used to sit which is good to explore regardless of being a reconstruction. We wandered around looking at the site for an hour or so, it was certainly a pleasant afternoon.
There is a visitors centre there where you can get an information flyer and a small map of the site. Its recommended to grab them first and, well look at it. As it turns out I did grab said map but didn’t look at it until after, I’d missed seeing a couple of the areas described. I guess that mean a trip back at some point to see the couple of places I missed seeing the first time round!!
It costs approximately 4,50 Euro (as at 08/03/2015) per person to enter the site. Its not really all that big and is an easy walk around the site which is perched on a hill with lovely views around the countryside and over the water.
It had been a lovely day but it was drawing to an end and after our exploration of the site we piled into the cars for the easy drive back to Nicosia.
