Chang Mai to Chang Rai

We went over to the Black Canyon coffee house for breakfast this morning, to support the local business of course… nothing to do with the great coffee or the fact we’re unlikely to have coffee as good while in Thailand…

After eating it was off to pack, check out then head off to the bus station to find a bus to Chang Rai.  We arrived at the bus station and managed to secure tickets though we had a couple of hours to wait until it departed.  Though since we managed to secure two of the last three tickets on that bus we were grateful that it wasn’t even later.

We spent the couple of hours wait over at one of the restaurants facing the bus station, reading and sipping on a cool drink.  Time passed quite quickly and before I knew it we were back at the bus station, on the bus and on our way.  The bus was fairly new and comfortable with the standard bottle of water being handed out to all of us.

We caught a tuk-tuk on arrival in Chang Rai to the Akha River House.  The Akha River House and the Akha Hill House is owned and run by the Akha Tribe with most of the profits going to the tribe.  They also run treks of various lengths up into the hills.

We decided on a two day one night trek figuring that the longer one would make the timing to get down to Krabi a little rushed.  That was a little unfortunate as a couple of the things we thought would be good to do were on the longer trek.  Still while we did consider changing treks ultimately we decided to stay with the one we had chosen.

We spent the night talking to an Australian couple in the outside dining area, its quite nice being right on the river as the name of the Guest House suggests.  Copious amounts of beer later we called it a night and crashed.
